UST Tigresses Win Against UE Warriors in UAAP Season 85 Women’s Volleyball
The University of Santo Tomas had a tough battle against the University of the East in the UAAP Season 85 women’s volleyball tournament. It was a marathon first set, but the Tigresses eventually emerged victorious with a score of 30-32, 25-18, 25-16, 25-14 on Saturday. Eya Laure led the team with 18 points, including 14 attacks, securing the Tigresses’ third consecutive victory.
UST Coach Kungfu Reyes acknowledged the team’s lapses on the court, stressing the importance of maintaining their intensity and correcting their mistakes during practice going into the second round. Regina Jurado also worked hard at the net with 13 points, including 10 attacks, while Filipino-Italian Milena Alessandrini joined in on the assault with 12 points and two service aces. Furthermore, Cassie Carballo had 15 excellent sets, and libero Bernadett Pepito showed great determination with 14 digs and 18 receptions.
The Tigresses took the lead early in the first set, taking advantage of their opponents’ errors. However, the UE Warriors managed to catch up through the heroics of Janeca Lana, KC Cepeda, and Vanessa Bangayan. Lana’s push and Riza Nogales’ blocking of Xyza Gula tied the score at 22. What followed was a long exchange of attacks and errors on both sides, with Cepeda ultimately hammering the UST defense with back-to-back kills, completing their dizzying comeback.
In the second set, the Tigresses made sure to maintain their lead and avoid a collapse. Two successive errors by Cepeda and Alessandrini’s down-the-line attack opened up a considerable advantage for UST, which Jurado punctuated with a pair of authoritative strikes. Imee Hernandez and KC Galdones led the charge in the third set, with a down-the-line attack and a block off Lana at match point, respectively.
Despite the Lady Warriors’ determination, they were unable to stop the Tigresses from securing a 5-2 record at the end of the first round of the tournament. The Tigresses can now head into the final phase of the UAAP Season 85 women’s volleyball tournament with the much-needed encouragement and confidence to sustain their game and aim to do better.
